LPR BOARD MEETING MINUTES
March 21, 2023, 7:01 PM to 8:03PM

Call to Order
President Dana called the meeting to order at 7:01PM.

Board Member Reports:

President – Dana Drysdale

February Board Minutes:  President Dana asked the Board to approve the February 7, 2023 Board minutes.

Ayes:  6   Noes:  None    Motion Passed

Zone 7 Enthusiast of the Year:  Peter Ridgway, Past President, was voted Z7 Enthusiast of the Year by the Zone’s Presidents.

We hope to have official photos soon.  Awards banquet was part of Z7 President’s meeting in Walnut Creek March 11.

Zone 7 President’s Meeting:

  • Parade:  Housing / Phase 1 registration still available.  Phase 2 – programs and events registration is April 5
  • New Member Social: PCA subsidizes $500, Dana D will check member locations from last 1.3 years, come up with a geo spot
  • Zone @ Parade: Sunday night welcome party – Brian Adkins will have a corner, look for the Z7 flag
  • Ideas from Regions:
    • Monterey:  Looking for multi-region events, met Pres Mark, any need to discuss starting with calendar sharing?
    • Diablo: Does Saturday breakfasts with a 1.5 – hour drive, doing one per month
    • Diablo:  Filled 40 slots on a tour, decided to run 2nd tour the next weekend
    • Various ideas:  Midweek tours, Car of the Day at Cars and Coffee, Car show where easily seen – not Concours
  • Alcohol policy reviewed: No alcohol at / near moving car events (“Concours is not a moving car event, a car on a lift is”)

The event can end, then go on to something else.  So: Drive to SC Wharf, event ends, then lunch.

  • Dealer relations:  Many ideas.  Got the impression that most Regions do not have sponsors outside Dealers

Good example idea:  Dealer supports a charity, can we help staff an event for that charity?  Mutual benefit.

  • National Update:  Tom Gorsuch, past PCA pres:
    • 2023 75th Anniversary of Porsche, Wolfie’s 80th Birthday – these will be big
    • Rennsport VII – Tom Provasi looking for a) colorful cars with a story b) Need volunteers – will be a callout
    • No corral for Historics – $$$
    • 996 Resto mod 6/10 auction, guess is $1MM
    • Future of Rennbow:  Add wheels, interior trim
    • Ideas for growth:  4 doors, popup events, Car Show.  Younger owners have multiple newer Porsches
  • Risk Management Update:  Many details – No Spectators at moving car events, everyone signs waiver
    • Do not promote non PCA events – Karting has been an issue
    • Will obtain presentation and forward to Board
  • Zone funding:  Approved small increases to Zone fees in AX ($6 per registrant to $10) and in Concours ($10 per Concours participant to $15)
  • Luftgekuhlt 9: April 29 & 30 Mare Island; 29th is traditional air, 30th is air and water – beginning to today; hint looking for transaxle

Discussion:

  1. Monterey Region – They can see our calendar on our website.   Honore will be happy to contact the President, Mark McMahon, for other ideas for multi-region activities.  Honore and Dana to discuss off-line.   Dave and Ed Hunter (GGR) have spoken with Mark.   Mark is interested in autocross events.  Dave has been sending Mark information about our autocrosses.
  2. Andy questioned if Porsche corral for Historics is available or not.   Historic Website states that it is available.  Dana will re-confirm.
  3. Zone Funding – Dave was in a separate Zoom meeting with the Zone Rep and other regions, and the Zone fees will be $8 instead of $10.
  4. Honore will discuss new member social with Dana off-line.

Vice President – Honore D’Angelo

3/2/2023 – Kelly’s Brewing Company – Great Event and attended by about 15 members – Great location also – will set up more events here later this year.  Peter signed up 3 new members.

3/18/2023 – St. Pat’s GTG at the Morgan’s.
4/8/2023 – Campbell Easter Parade is back!
5/4/2023 – Possible Thirsty Thursday – BeerThirty – Santa Cruz – Jim Turk and I are coordinating and we will have more details soon.
7/15/2023 – Annual Picnic at Roaring Camp – $7,000 budget has been approved by the Board for this event.
12/2/2023 – Awards Banquet – $9,000 budget has been approved by the Board for this event.

Discussion:  St. Pat’s GTG at the Morgans’ was cancelled.  The contact for the Campbell Easter Parade is Kathy Musser per the Blast.   Kathy not sure if a lunch after the Parade will happen.   If anyone has suggestions for lunch, that would be great.   Send final announcement to Dana Ambrisko prior to April 1 Blast.

Secretary – Sheila Dunwoodie

Thank you for your reports in advance of the meeting!

Treasurer – Andy Ward

  • Recap: February Financials
  • Expenses: $ 799
  • Income: $ 4,240
  • Net Income: $ 3,441
  • Income was: Prieta Post Advertising, PCA Membership Rebate, Interest
  • Expenses were: Administrative, Annual Picnic GTG, Annual Holiday Awards Banquet
  • Recap YTD Financials, Jan 1 to Feb 28, 2023:
  • Expenses: $ 1,069
  • Income: $ 7,246
  • Net Income: $ 6,177

A few items to note:

  • Signature authority for our so-called E-checking account has been transferred to President Dana and I. Unfortunately, I still am unable to access bank statements online or that account, so one more trip to Bank of the West will be necessary to fix that problem
  • As of Friday, the club’s new debit cards have not yet arrived. Dana and I went to the bank on Friday after a visit to the Post Office (to update ownership of the LPR PO Box), and they suggested we wait one more week before giving up on the cards and cancelling them. I’ll be checking the PO Box again on Monday, 13-March, and will head to the bank to cancel the existing card order, and initiate a new one if they have still not arrived.   – – Update:  New ones have been ordered and will be send to their home addresses.
  • Additional sponsorship money has come in, as has our annual membership income rebate from PCA. Expenses included a few minor administrative items, and board-approved expenses for the Annual Picnic GTG and the annual Holiday Awards Banquet
  • Participated in the Treasurer’s session through PCA National.

Nothing to report.

Chairperson Reports:

Autocross – Dave Dunwoodie

Our first event Feb 26th went well with 41 drivers showing up. Everyone got dry runs in, free sandwiches at lunch, and we were packed-up and driving out at 2:30pm, about 30 minutes ahead of the rain. We had barely enough drivers/workers to run the event but it worked.

Our next event is March 25th at Crows Landing and is a Zone 7 event as well. I think we are in good shape with 42 registrants at 11 days out.

I plan to supply lunches at our events in the future. None of our sites are close to any fast-food like the Cow Palace was and we are not dealing with covid restrictions like the past 3 years.

Togo’s worked well for Crows Landing at $10/sandwich plus delivery. At Salinas Airport the Flying Artichoke will do box lunches for $10-$12 each. For all events the registration fee should cover the costs for lunch.

Per email of 2/21/23 – AX1 sandwiches. Proposal:  Request approval for purchase up to $560 for Sandwiches for all AX1 attendees.  Second: John Gould Ayes:  6  Noes:  None  Motion passes

Per email of 3/6/23 – Autocross Equipment.    Proposal:  Request approval for up to $2000 for Autocross equipment Second: Andy Ward  Ayes:  6  Noes:  None  Motion passes

Update:  Was able to purchase blemished cones at a reduced price.     We also currently have 65 registrants for the March 25 Autocross.  We will have enough workers and we will be making a profit.

Proposal:  For our next event on March 25, Dave needs board approval for the Crows Landing site fee ($1800), Portables, ($500), and sandwiches ($800).  Second:  Kathy Musser Ayes:  6 Noes:  None Motion Passes

Charity – Kathy Musser, Kris Vanacore, Emilie Highley

Morgan Autism – MA’s Gala and Fundraiser, Starry Starry Night is being held on May 6th.    Kris is continuing to collect wines for the “Wine Pull” and Emilie is continuing to collect auction items.   Kris’ cousin is making a quilt as an auction item.    Please let Kris and Emilie know if you have something to donate for either of these Gala activities.

Hospitality – Emilie Highley

A sympathy card was sent to Robert Khamashta upon the loss of his wife, Yvonne.    Details on the Memorial will follow once information is obtained.    Please keep the Khamashta family in your thoughts and prayers.

Discussion:

  1. Thank you to Dana Ambrisko for getting out the LPR Birthday Blast from Ken and June.
  2. Previously, flowers have been sent when someone has died. However, instead of sending flowers, Emilie, is planning on spending money on planting a tree in honor of the deceased.   The current price is $10 per tree.   The family will receive a certificate about the tree and the forest that the tree will be planted.

Prieta Post Editor – Don Chaisson

The Mar/Apr issue (The LPR History Edition) was completed and published on time late

Feb. It was an interesting issue to work on and assemble. Thanks to all the members who provided historical perspective and insight to the region’s rich history.

The issue’s uptake statistics follow (see Appendix A at the end of the report):
Number of individual “readers” since publish date (2/23) is shown below. The tracking is similar to previous issues where there are a number of early readers followed by a surge of readers with additional readers off and on. The big “peak” shows 59 readers in a 5-day span and 87 readers over the first month availability.

Readers in the 5-day span were interested as they spent a collective 5+ hours “reading”.

The number of readers exceeded that of the Jan/Feb issues in its first month availability by 18%. So, we’re going in the right direction!

The next issue (The Need for Speed) will center on “speed” events including article(s) on LPR AutoX and GT racing at Sonoma. It will include the growing number of other “departments” including formal calendar, member corner (new members, etc.), “In case you missed it” reprise of a couple LPR events, and maybe a surprise or two.

Discussion:

  1. The reminder in the Blast helps readership.
  2. Dave’s picture of his 1970 911 RSR will be on the next issue (The Need for Speed). Need Dave to have an article prepared for this issue.
  3. Don is considering a tour pre-Rennsport to Lathrop to visit a Shop.

Public Relations – Open

We are looking for someone to take this position – basics are sending photos, possibly an article into Panorama.  John is happy to continue taking pictures, but anyone should feel free to take photos.

John was planning on submitting a photo etc. from the St. Pat’s GTG to Panorama, but since that was cancelled, he will re-visit the GTG at Mr. Mojito’s or possibly a Cars & Coffee.   Dave mentioned that he has four photographers at the upcoming Autocross that will have some photos as well.

Safety – John Reed

The Observer’s Report and Post Event Report for the February LPR Autocross was sent to PCA in a timely manner. The release forms were sent to the LPR Activities Director.  Thank you, Ed Tefankjian.

The safety check inspection of the LPR autocross trailer was completed on March 4th, several items that need replacing/updating were noted and actions were taken to address these items. Thanks to the LPR autocross Team for completing this inspection.

Tour – Hugh Calvin

No tours in February.

Social Media – Dana Ambrisko

  • March Blast Update was sent the evening of February 28th
  • March Mid-month Blast will be sent on or around 15th

Discussion:  Ken and June were delighted with the Blast regarding the 53rd Birthday of the club.   Dana Drysdale stated that he always receives compliments regarding the Blasts that Dana sends out.   It is very much appreciated.

Tech – Peter Ridgway

Absent – Report submitted.

Concours
a) Fremont Concours date set:   Nov. 5th
b) Concours Judging School
        –   April 16th part 1 – via Zoom.  Details sent after MSR registration
        –   May 14th hands on practice at Stevens Creek Porsche

Sponsors
Only unconfirmed sponsors are Dell Exotic Auto, BTM motorwerks and Elephant Racing.
BTM is 90% certain, Elephant is 75% certain and Dell Auto is 50% certain.
May approach Fastlane in Santa Cruz.

Printed copies of the Jan/Feb and Mar/Apr issues of the POST to use when talking to sponsors.
Very positive responses.  Gunter at Fremont got to keep the Concours issue.  Fremont Porsche really stood out in that issue.
Had them printed and bound at Staples.  About $19/issue but I found that Staples would bind printed copies for under $5 so I will try to print my own next issue.  Also noted that Staples uses 28 pound paper which really stands out.

Trying to set up Tech Sessions for 2023
a) A Superior Collision Shop – tour and getting the most out of your collision insurance talk
b) BRRacing – PPI – pre purchase inspections.  What BRR does
c) Wardell’s  – upholstery shop AND new Detail/Car Wash center
d)  possible tour and tech at Superior Performance Wheels in Sacramento

Rumor has it that LPR might join with the Corvette Club for another Casino Night at Modderman/Custom Alignment.  Working on more details and a date!

Webmaster – Jim Turk

Worked on the following website tasks during February, slow month.

  1. Maintenance
  2. Next Cars & Coffee will be on Mother’s Day – May 14, 2023

Old Business:  None

New Business:

Discussion of payment methods.  Many of our vendors will take a Credit Card, our Debit Cards work fine. Some interest in Zelle, Venmo, Paypal.  Andy will open subject.

Andy reported that in the Treasurer’s session he attended from PCA, they encourage e-payments though they did not expand very much on the topic.  Andy will investigate to see whether there is a recorded PCA session on the topic.   Dana and Andy will discuss off-line and submit to the board.

FYI – MSR is a handy tool for our registrations.   However, Dave mentioned that in addition to our fees, MSR is charging our customers an additional $2.00 fee.   We should be MSR’s customer; not our customer.   The BMW club is a heavy MSR user, so will keep an eye on what they may do in the future.

Adjourn Meeting:  Meeting adjourned by President Dana at 8:03 PM
