#6

Dear
Porsche Friend,
|
Pam
Ryder & Laurie Delimon
Prieta Post
Co-Editors |
It's hard to believe that
this is our third issue of the new Prieta Post! We
are happy to hear from so many that you are
enjoying the new format. With tours being sold out
quickly and great turnouts at events, it appears
that we are achieving our goal: easy and effective
communication with club members!
In addition to reaching
members in a new way, we are also taking a
different approach in working with our
advertisers. With a great new website, an active
YouTube Channel and Facebook page in addition to
the electronic Prieta Post, we can now offer our
advertisers far more visibility to Porsche
enthusiasts. We describe these as the four
cornerstones of our new Partner Program. Why
"Partner" rather than "Advertiser"? Because these
four elements are interactive, it allows LPR and
partnering organizations to work together and both
benefit from the relationship. The program is
divided into Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze
sponsorships with customized benefits for each,
all involving different types and levels of
exposure in the Prieta Post, our website, Facebook
page and YouTube Channel. If you know of a
business or company that would be interested in
joining our Partner Program please email us at lprpca@gmail.com and our Marketing
Committee will be happy to arrange a
presentation.
We have a lot of great
activities coming up! Whether you enjoy tours,
autocrossing, rallyes, socials or Tech Sessions,
there is enough on this year's calendar to keep
you busy! The best way to keep up with events is
to add our Google Calendar to your personal
calendar. And if you think you want to participate
in a tour or event, don't wait to RSVP! Do it
today and we will see you there!
Enjoy!

If
you were to look back at my opening remarks in the
February edition of the Post, you would see that I
opened with, "Some days you just get
lucky."
Well,
the corollary is, "and some days you don't." On Sunday,
January 15th we joined with 60 LPR enthusiasts for the
first tour of the year to the Crow's Nest in Santa Cruz.
It was a fun drive and our 96 Cab ran like Swiss watch.
A good time was had by all, and after a great brunch we
continued our drive by heading up the coast with Don and
Leslie Orlando following in their 993 Cab.
The
run up Highway 1 was quick and uneventful. We turned
onto 84 and headed up through La Honda to Alice's
Restaurant at the junction of 84 and Skyline Blvd.
(Highway 35) where we sat outside taking in the scenery
while enjoying some fresh berry pie a la mode and good
strong coffee. Then down we went towards Woodside and
onto Highway 280, heading back home. But then our luck
ran out!
As
we turned onto Highway 85 we heard a loud bang, as
though we hit something in the road. The engine was
still running fine and I could row through the gears but
there was no connection to the wheels, so we limped off
to the right shoulder with gear oil pouring out of the
back end. Ouch!
After
climbing up a steep embankment to get away from the
traffic, we sent an SOS out to AAA. Then a CHP stopped
by who reminded us that when broken down on the highway
the safest waiting place is in your car with the seat
belt on even though it doesn't really feel that way! In
no time, AAA sent a flatbed truck and the car was
deposited on Don Wise's doorstep.
The
next morning we discovered that the entire ring and
pinion, pumpkin (the internal casting that holds
everything together and kind of looks like a pumpkin)
and case were destroyed.
Deemed
non-repairable, we went on a search for a rebuilt unit.
It's no small challenge to find a 16 year-old G50
transmission in good shape that can be rebuilt. Don
persevered and located a great group called GBox in
Boulder, Colorado that are experts in Porsche
transmissions. A solid unit was just arriving at their
shop and available. I contracted with Stan at GBox, who
assured me they could turn around the unit in about a
week's time. GBox does a lot of race-prep work and
really knows their stuff. He strongly recommended I
upgrade to the Porsche limited-slip differential for
strength as well as performance.
$6,000
and a week later my new transmission (actually the
entire transaxle) arrived at Don's shop for
installation. We also followed the GBox recommendation
to replace the clutch master and slave cylinders.
I
picked the car up on Tuesday, February 14th, one month
since the shattered differential halted any power
delivery to the rear wheels. Don's lead mechanic, Worth
Taylor, did his usual outstanding job and the car runs
perfectly. In fact, it seems quicker than it was, which
is probably a result of the limited slip and its ability
to really get the power down when exiting a turn. It
shifts like a hot knife through butter in every gear,
something it had never done before, and has allowed me
to enjoy the car even more.
So,
after all of that, how do I rate the outcome?
Well,
some days you just get lucky!

Autocross
Co-Chair | A
little drizzle didn't faze our AX team when the troops
gathered to get the trailer ready for the upcoming AX
season. Scruffy faded orange cones were replaced with
beautiful bright and shiny new ones--300 of them to be
exact! Radios were outfitted with fresh batteries and
lanyards and sleek new black helmets replaced the
outdated scuffed up white ones! Doug Ryder took the
dents out of the trailer fenders, painted them black and
sanded and refinished the wheels. Soon we'll be adding
graphics from Porsche of Fremont to the trailer as we
welcome them alongside Borelli Motor Sports as our Gold
level partners this year. It's going to be a GREAT
season! So get ready by attending
our... Second Annual AX Ground
School Whether you're a newbie, or a
seasoned AXer, there will be something for you at this
great event! Join us at Borelli Motor Sports from
10:00 am - 2:00 pm on Saturday
March 10th. We'll start the morning with some light
refreshments while you meet fellow AXers and check out
Borelli Motor Sports' beautiful facility. You'll meet
our 2012 AX Team, and get a full overview of an AX --
including etiquette and worker positions. We can help
you class your car and there will be tech assistance
available from Borelli experts Dave G & Scott R.
We'll finish off the event with lunch and the dessert
and the liquid libation that I'm famous (they say) for.
Wonder what that is? Join us and find out! To make sure
we have enough class materials etc. please RVSP to
mailto:alroth@sbcglobal.net
Please note the AX
Ground School start time is 10:00
am!
See ya in Marina,
Anne

Larry
Sharp
Autocross
Co-Chair | So is
everyone starting to get a little "antsy" with the long
winter AX off-season? Well the wait is just about over
for us speed freaks! March
31st is the date for our first
AX at Marina. But before you think we just have the
plain-Jane same-as-always competition this year, there
is something new! Our last event of the year will
feature a special race within a race. It will be a Zone
7 Race of Champions (7ROC). The 7ROC will be run with a
"neutral" car to give everyone a fighting chance to win.
The race will consist of invited drivers from across
PCA's Zone 7. To be considered for this special race, as
a Loma Prieta member, you should demonstrate great
talent, consistency, and speed in our regional series.
Winning your class will give you a strong case to be
included in the 7ROC. This means competing in most, if
not all, of the season's events. It doesn't hurt to
compete in the Zone 7 Series AXes as well during 2012.
So don't let the first event pass you by. As they say in
Chicago, race early and race
often.
See you at the
events!

Is Your
Car AX & Tour Ready?
|
|
Don Wise | There
is nothing more important than having your car in top
running condition before an autocross or tour. A little
time invested before an event can ensure that you'll
pass an AX tech inspection or avoid having your car
inconveniently towed away on a tour.
This year
Don Wise of Don's Autowerks, is reviving an old
tradition of opening his shop for LPR members every
Thursday evening prior to an Autocross event. Members
will have access to the lifts and other equipment to
ensure their cars are in tip-top shape for race
day.
Don provides this service to club members at
no charge, but requests that participating members RSVP
to don@donsautowerks.com. The shop will be open from
6:00 to 8:30 pm. each Thursday before
Autocross.
Don is also providing a free
inspection to any club member who is planning on joining
a tour but wants to have his or her car checked out
before embarking on a lengthy drive. Inspections can
typically be done without an appointment but you may
want to call Don in advance at (408) 871-9108.
Inspections are not too time consuming, so plan on
waiting. Minor repairs can often be done while you
wait! |
Tech
from Les: 991 Test Drive
|

Chair |
Have
you wondered what it's like to get into a new Porsche,
especially the new 2013 Porsche 991, for a test drive?
As someone who is driving a 2002 996, I can only say
it's something else! How can you possibly
compare?
I
was recently at Porsche of Fremont to get my car
serviced, and while I was waiting, I was asked if I
wanted to test-drive the new 991. No question in my
mind, that's for sure! They only have the new 991 with
PDK and I'm strictly a stick shift person, but how could
I refuse a 991 test drive? Even though it was a short
drive, I was really amazed at what Porsche has included
in this new model.
Most
noticeable is the new GPS. Not only is it a touch
screen, but it is also able to move a small screen on
the dash, in front of you, so you can get a good view of
where you are, and where you are going. I like that
part. I think that as a driver, you need the least
amount of distractions, so you can pay attention to
driving.
Another
new function is the sports mode, as it adds at least 10
mph to the start (NOT Launch control) giving you that
little extra to get going. There are so many other new
functions incorporated into the 991 that I can't even
remember them all. I'm ready to order a new 991, and
will do so sometime this year. So, when I get it, I'll
take you for a test drive, and let you get the same
sensation as I did. It's pretty amazing!
Join
us at Porsche of Fremont on March 24 at 9:00 am for a
tech session focusing on the features of the new 991. We
hope that one will be available, as they are being sold
as quickly as they come in! Gunter Feldmeier (Service
Manager at Porsche of Fremont) promises to do the best
he can to have one available for us, and have it on the
lift so we can look underneath.
I
hope to see you there! Check out a preview of the new
991 at Porsche of Fremont's 991 Launch party
held in early February.

twice. It eventually was abandoned until 2003 when it
was purchased and refurbished. It opened two years later
with 20 luxurious guest rooms and a special events
center. The drive will include the beautiful wine
country roads and a luncheon stop in

LPR
Website Features Historical
Archives
Did
you ever wonder who was LPR President in 1989? Perhaps
you are the winner of one of our annual awards and
wonder about prior year recipients. Or maybe you'd
like to take a trip down memory lane by perusing a copy
of an old Prieta Post.
One
of the benefits of today's technology is that we can
organize and share LPR's historical information in
a way that has previously been impossible. You can
now find the current issue of the Prieta Post on the
website along with archived issues dating back to
2004 by clicking here. Eventually we hope to scan
all issues the Prieta Post, going back to the club's
founding. The database for annual award winners is
almost complete and should be posted by the end of
March. If you have historical data or documents you'd
like to share, please contact Pam
Ryder.
In
answer to the question above, the President in 1982 was
current Membership Chair, Tom Provasi. For a

News: Porsche Experience Center in
California! |
Porsche
Cars North America has announced plans to build its
second US Porsche Experience Center in Carson,
California. The 53-acre facility and road handling
course will be one of only five such sites in the world
including the original Porsche Experience Center at the
legendary Silverstone Circuit in Great Britain and
Centers in Leipzig, Germany and Shanghai, China. In May
of last year, another Porsche Experience Center located
in Atlanta, Georgia was announced as part of the
company's new US Headquarters.
The
centerpiece of the complex will be a world-class test
track and handling course, including areas where special
surfaces replicate rain, ice and snow conditions. These
training sections include the Ice Hill, where a steep
slope, computer-controlled water jets, and a low
friction surface will challenge even the most
experienced drivers and help them improve their real
world skills. A special off-road area will combine
45-degree declines and ascents-ideal terrain for
unleashing a Porsche Cayenne.
Driving
enthusiasts can sign up for sessions with highly trained
Porsche driving consultants, while new drivers can
enroll in programs that teach technique for navigating
today's challenging roadways. The Porsche Driving
Experience isn't just for adults - special programs for
kids will ensure that even young enthusiasts get an
early start in the art of automobile appreciation.
Facilities, including track access, dining and
conference spaces, will also be open to car clubs,
corporate clients, and other special groups.
In
addition to vehicle-based activities, the Porsche
Experience Center will also offer programs focused on
maximizing personal fitness, wellness, and athletic
performance through its Porsche Human Performance
Center. This unique facility will feature a leading
sports science laboratory and training programs,
incorporating the latest techniques used in preparing
Porsche race car drivers. Whether an individual's
competition vehicle of choice has four wheels or two -
or consists of one's own legs - the Porsche Human
Performance Center offers customized experiences ranging
from heat acclimation training and hydration strategies
to individual wellness assessments. Groundbreaking in
Carson is anticipated for summer 2012.

de Krote #8 (aka the Death Valley
Tour) |
Contributed
by Howard & Vern
Thomas
Loma Prieta Region's
Larry and KC Sharp led the 5th "nowhere near annual"
Tour de Krote to Death Valley on Presidents' Day
weekend. Vern and I joined this rag-tag caravan
|
Our Fearless
Leader
| of forty-two
alleged Porsche owners who followed a diesel powered
Volkswagen into the desert. The "cross-cultural" group
represented members from Loma Prieta, Redwood, Golden
Gate, Diablo, Yosemite, and Redwood, regions. Vehicular
diversity was the order of the day. Flaunting written
assignments, two self-selected groups headed out from
Tulare, frog stickers firmly affixed to our cars and
provisioned with goodie bags from KC. Was this a good
idea?
We headed south on Highway 99 past Kraft's
gourmet Parmesan cheese factory, industrial wine
refineries, and hundreds of acres of cherry trees in
full bloom before
|
No one out here but
us! | turning east toward
Lake Isabella. After climbing up and over the rocky
ridge we landed on Route 395 and headed north to Lone
Pine for lunch. Not to overwhelm the local restaurants
we split in to two groups; one headed for Mt. Whitney
restaurant and one for Alabama Hills Café and Bakery. No
complaints were heard so both places must have been darn
good.
After lunch, we headed south on 395 and
then east for fuel economy testing on the dips, turns,
and flats of Highway 190. It was reported that TDI fuel
consumption appears to increase exponentially with
velocity, but further study is indicated. After
regrouping at Father Crowley Point, we headed into
Saline Valley and up and over the pass into Stovepipe
Wells. Accommodations at Stovepipe Wells are charming -
hotel rooms with a drinkable faucet next to the regular
faucet, 87 octane mystery gas, and "take it or drive 30
miles" buffet dining. In typical club fashion, drinks,
goodies, and lawn chairs appeared as the sun set. At
dinner we dined (a la buffet) on rib roast and chicken
with all the fixins' including bread pudding and pecan
pie for desert. Larry Sharp did a brief presentation of
the "rally" quiz winners - who was that oldest guy
again?
|
Artists' Palette at
Sunset | Sunday, we
were on our own forming small groups to scamper across
the desert to see the sites - Scotty's Castle, the
crater, the raceway and Furnace Creek according to
taste. In our Scotty's Castle group, the engineers took
the underground tour while the artistic types toured the
living quarters. Those with more truck-like vehicles
explored further into the desert and thus regained some
of the credibility lost during the aforementioned fuel
economy test. A few of us defied common sense by walking
into a crater that we then had to walk out of. We paid a
ridiculous price for premium gasoline in Furnace
Creek.
As the sun set, the lawn chairs, goodies,
and beverages reappeared like night blooming cactus. We
discovered a new dimension for gummy bears. After
recounting the day's events, we split up into groups to
enjoy dinner with our friends, old and new.
While
some lingered, others headed back on Sunday. We followed
Larry and KC up Highway 395 and through the Tahoe basin
in a winter test of our summer only autocross tires. The
tires stuck as we skirted precipitation and the scenery
was unforgettable.
A big thanks to Larry and KC
Sharp for organizing the event and the "goodie bags",
and George Niedel for the frogs.

Another
Souper Night! |
Contributed by Pam
Ryder
Soup
Night is the longest running LPR event and year after
year draws crowds anxious
to socialize and sample some tasty soups. Since 1992,
Bill and Lorraine Glathe
have welcomed us into their beautiful home for this
annual tradition.
More than 50 revelers arrived at
the Glathe's and quickly eyed the eight crock-pots
warming the assorted soups for the evening. With wine
flowing and an assortment of appetizers enticing
us, the group mingled or sat outside in the cool
not-quite-winter weather. It wasn't long before the
appetizers were cast aside and the literal "soup
line" began! Plates were filled with salads, mini soup
bowls were brimming with steaming soup and Lorraine
passed warm crusty bread to us at the tables. What
service!
So was it possible to taste all eight
soups? Perhaps those who have Soup Night down to an
art may have figured out the logistics. However, as a
Soup Night newbie, I failed miserably managing to
taste only three! With everyone raving about their
selections conversation quickly turned to recipes. So by
popular request, we've got them for you!
As
the evening wound down, the group gravitated to the
overflowing dessert table while Doug Ryder (LPR
President) and Emilie Highley (LPR Co-VP) thanked
our fabulous hosts and presented them with a bottle of
champagne. Bill and Lorraine had asked that no
money be spent on a gift for them asking
instead that the money be donated to charity. After
the usual run down of upcoming events, Emilie asked
who might be celebrating a February birthday.
Numerous hands were raised except for Leslie
Orlando who seemed to be trying to stay away from
the topic. However, it was only moments before hubby Don
appeared with a birthday cake aglow with candles
and the group broke into song. Don and Leslie
slipped their wedding rings over a candle before making
a wish and blowing them out. This tradition
representing unending love began in Leslie's family
and they have continued it over their years of
marriage.
Winter isn't over. Some might say it
hasn't even begun! So take a look at these tasty
soup recipes. They are all
winners!

Rik Larson, SVR Rally Chairperson and Richard Wetzel,
SVR member
Preparations
are underway to present a rallye school on Sunday, April
15th for those interested in learning about TSD
(time-speed-distance) rallying. The TSD rallye is one of
the competitive events that you can compete in at the
Porsche Parade in July in Salt Lake City. The rules
allow for 4 classes so you pick the one that is
appropriate to your car's equipment (navigational
systems move you up in class ---- even if you don't even
know how to turn it on).
The
rallye school will be held at Porsche of Livermore. This
provides for a central location for most of the PCA
members in Zone 7. We want to thank Diablo Region for
working with us (Sacramento Valley Region) to host these
events. This event is open to all PCA members and to the
public. PCA members receive priority. Fees for the
school and the rallye have not yet been finalized.
There
will be a 2-hour classroom session in the morning,
followed by a lunch break, and then an opportunity to
put your newly acquired skills to the test on an actual
rallye in the afternoon. You can attend both or either
one.
The
rallye school will be held at Porsche of Livermore, 3100
Las Positas Road, Livermore, CA. 94551, 925.447.6400.
Registration time has not yet been finalized but should
be before 10 am.
To reserve your space in class
and/or to participate in the rallye, please RSVP to Rik
Larson via email: rik.larson@gmail.com or
call 916.481.6084. The 2012 Porsche Parade TSD
Rallye General Instructions, if available, will be used
as a reference for the school and for the
rallye.
There
is also a follow-up rallye techniques session planned
for Sunday, July 1. It will be held at Niello Porsche in
Rocklin. More information to follow later.
Questions
can be sent to Rik Larson at rik.larson@gmail.com or call
916.481.6084.
Don't
forget that Porsche Parade registration opens March

Curious to know
more about your fellow LPR members? Haven't heard a good
car story in awhile?
Maybe you need a new cool driving road or are
just curious to
know who's
driving what. We'll answer these questions and more each
month as we feature a different member of LPR.
Remember, it's not
just the cars, but the people too.
Welcome to
Porsche Personen (People). I hope you enjoy it.
Our first
featured members need little introduction, as they are
founding members of Loma Prieta Region. For more
than 40 years they have remained active in just
about everything we
do, from tours and social events to autocrossing and
rallyes. They continue to be a driving
force in our club's fun, success and growth. Come

Porsche Personen presents June and
Ken Iles
Porsche ownership
history My current Porsche is a 1999
Cobalt Blue 996 Carrera. It has a built-in GPS system
that disappears at the touch of a button and a fixed CB
radio. June's current Porsche is a 2003 silver
Boxster "S", extensively modified with "Aeroquip" body
style parts, including a small 'tail'. It also has
a built-in GPS system and CB radio. Previous Porsches
include five different 911's, Targa, 914, 928 and
924.
LPR & family
history
In 1969 we were
members of the Monterey Bay Region and I was their
Newsletter Editor. In 1970 we became Charter
Members of LPR. June and I are both retired. I was
a Mechanical engineer at Abbott Laboratories and June
was in HR at Stanford Graduate School of Business.
My hobby is building working model steam engines.

Favorite driving
roads
I like driving
all Californian mountain roads, especially those with
twisty hairpins.
A
driving story
I've driven
several different tracks; Santa Maria Raceway, Portland
International and Laguna Seca - the latter once being
driven in a reverse direction but that's too long a
story for here! I did a factory tour on Weisaach Test
Track and driven a brand new 996 absolutely
flat-out (250 kph +) on the Autobahn during 1998 Porsche
Fest. We've attended several Porsche Parades, the first
being at Sun Valley in 1970.
Favorite club
activities
June and I were
both avid AXers in younger days. Tours are our favorite
today, with GTGs (socials) a close second. I have
an interest in writing having been a Contributor to
Christophorus, West Coast Editor of Panorama and Editor
of the Prieta Post for short
time. I'm
currently P.R. Director of LPR.
A
good ticket story
I've had only
one ticket in a Porsche. And that case was dismissed
when I challenged it
in
court!
