Dear
Porsche Friend,
|
Pam
Ryder & Laurie Delimon
Prieta Post
Co-Editors |
Volunteerism was recently
described in a blog as the act of giving of the
most priceless gift you possess, your time, given
without expectation of tangible reward.
It's amazing that PCA,
which serves more than 100,000 members, has only a
handful of paid staff and is the largest single
marque car club in the world. That says quite a
bit about the passion and dedication of Porsche
owners.
LPR has always had an
active membership with so many willing to step up
and do what is necessary to get the job done.
We're not sure, but we're guessing that we may
have a club member or two who has held every
single Board Position and has the badges to prove
it. Our LPR volunteers spend hours planning tours,
plotting challenging rallyes and AX courses,
writing and designing our newsletter and website,
handling our finances, planning parties and
charity events, managing our membership, selling
advertising, arranging informative tech sessions,
procuring event insurance, taking photographs,
training newbie AX drivers and enough other
activities that would overtake this newsletter.
Bottom line, our volunteers keep this club vibrant
and deserving of the moniker The Good Times
Region.
So, think about joining
in. Volunteer your time and your talent. Make a
difference. Have fun. Meet new volunteers and ones
that have a long history of giving of their time
and energy. Share your passion for Porsche. Call
or email any Board member or use the Contact Us
Form on our website. And if life is just too busy
to help out now, remember our volunteers with a
simple "Thank You". That is our tangible
reward!

I
don't know about you, but I am none too pleased with our
skyrocketing gas prices! Like you, I fill up my 911 with
maybe 15 to 20 gallons of gas and it costs a whopping
$70 to $90!! I haven't yet given up my pleasure drives
in the Santa Cruz mountains - but ouch!
My
first thought, when upset with the constant rise at the
pump, is the obscene profits the oil refining companies
have been posting in recent years. Are they gouging the
American public? Or, is the U.S. just catching up to the
rest of the world, which has paid these prices for many
years?
I
thought it would be interesting to do a little research
and try to give you some reasons why this is happening.
One piece of good news is that supply is adequate, so we
can still feed our cars and our passion - at least until
the price of gas becomes just plain
prohibitive.
Did
You Know?
- In
California we are running near 2008 pricing with
regular gas cresting the $4.00 per gallon mark.
- In
North America alone there is enough oil to fuel every
passenger car in the United States for 430 years.
- The
U.S. is the third largest oil-producing nation in the
world, behind only Saudi Arabia and Russia. Our total
recoverable oil resources are more than six times the
proved reserves of Saudi Arabia.
The Washington Post recently
advised that, "Readers should immediately discount
anything politicians say about gas prices." Gleaned from
several articles I read, the following five issues are
the real reasons gas prices are climbing.
Demand
The
recent recession in our economy (and other countries, as
well) lowered the demand for oil, which in turn
depressed gas prices. As the recovery is gaining steam
and more people are working, demand for gasoline is
rising. The Wall Street Journal recently reported,
"Analysts warn that oil could become even more expensive
in the second half of the year as supplies struggle to
catch up with rising demand." It's the age-old law of
supply and demand - demand goes up, so follows
pricing.
Global
Politics
Iran
has threatened to blockade the Straits of Hormuz,
through which 20% of the world's oil supply flows. The
result has been panic buying in Europe - further driving
up prices. In addition, U.S. imposed sanctions could
reduce demand for Iranian oil, lowering production
requirements by up to 300,000 barrels a day!
Speculation
This
is Wall Street's negative impact on gas prices. When
Wall Street players speculate on futures for oil prices,
it tends to add a premium to that oil and derivative gas
prices. Not everyone buys into this but it is estimated
by some, that it's adding 8 to 10 cents per gallon of
crude oil and as much as 50 cents per gallon of gas -
due to these speculative "bets". So, if you're paying
$4.50 a gallon and fill your 20-gallon tank, costing you
$90.00, you might be getting hit for $10.00 just in
speculation "fees".
It's
Seasonal
Typically
we don't see gas prices increase until summer approaches
and demand goes up through the vacation season. But this
year we are seeing dramatic rises in prices in the dead
of winter. The other seasonal driver for higher prices
in summer is the increased smog level the summer heat
exacerbates. Refineries then produce cleaner-burning
fuels - that cost more.
Fuel
Efficient Cars How can fuel efficient
cars drive up the cost of gas, you ask? They use less
gas, but while that is a good thing, it reduces state
revenues. California, which is in terrible fiscal
condition, raises the gas tax to make up or the
shortfall in revenues. Currently California gets 48.6
cents on every gallon of gas sold in the state. Not a
small impact by any measure.

That's
about all the space
I
get, so I will wrap up by providing this graphic.
Seems
like everybody is getting their piece but the American
public. And, if you believe gas prices will eventually
come back down to the good ole' days - I've got a bridge
I'd like to sell you.

Driving
"Martina", my 45-year-old fair weather daily driver, to
and from an AX, makes me a bit "Anne L"! After a long
and steep learning curve, there are a number of things I
always carry with me. Since the list is rather lengthy,
I will focus on the "make-up" kit I put together a
number of years ago that lives in my glove compartment.
I consider these essentials, and if I need to make use
of them on the road, I don't want to be digging through
the major stuff in the front boot. Using a woman's
makeup bag I carry:
- A set of brushes for the generator (912s not
having an alternator)
- A set of ignition wrenches (to adjust the dizzy)
- Phillips and slotted stubby screwdrivers (carb
adjustments)
- Mini screwdrivers--slotted and Phillips (just
because)
- Small needle-nose pliers (they fit in the bag)
- Woodruff keys for the pulley (you know it's going
to drop and it sounds like a pachinko machine)
- A couple of extra shims/spacers for the pulley
(why not?)
- A couple of emery boards (to clean up corrosion on
contacts)
- Small pieces of 00 polishing paper (to smooth out
contacts after using emery board)
- A finger magnet (from Griot's Garage--slips onto a
finger and has a magnet imbedded in the tip-to
retrieve the woodruff key that dropped)
- Short pieces of wire (you never know!)
- A roll of electrical tape (have to patch the wire
somehow)
More
than once, at an AX, I have needed one or more of these
items, not just for me, but also for fellow AXers
driving 912s, and older 911s as well. My creature
comfort and essential must haves for AX day consist
of:
- My new, beautiful, very girlie Snell 2010 helmet
- My folding camp chair, with awning, no less
- My snack and lunch soft-sided cooler bag, which
has external pockets that hold hand cream, sanitary
hand wipes (hate dirty fingers), pens, markers and
tissue packs
- My heavy (for California) hooded jacket, my not so
heavy hooded jacket, a sweatshirt and an extra shirt.
Never know what the Marina weather might be and I have
a tendency to share my clothes with those in need, as
I do my lunch, snacks and water.
If
you want a full tour of what I consider essential items,
just ask at any AX, or any other event, for that matter,
I am more that willing to share!
See ya in Marina,
Anne

Autocross Co-Chair |
Next
month in my column I will be able to share some stories
about the first LPR AX of 2012. But for now, I just have
to blather on about some oddities in the AX scene.
- Did you know there are 8 different groups in the
Bay area that love having PCA members show up and
autocross with them?
- Did you know every year Porsche Club of America
has a national convention happening somewhere in the
USA? This year it is located fairly close in Salt Lake
City, Utah. The word is that the AX site is going to
be really nice in size and pavement.
- At the last American AutoX series event in Marina,
it was very obvious that the current hot tire for AX
is the Hankook RS-3.
- Redwood Region has, for the first time, started a
yearlong series championship. They will be using the
GGR rulebook for classes and points. If you ever want
to go head to head with one of the best, Henry Watts,
who is a long time LPR member and the author of the
book "Secrets of Solo Racing" is
usually competing in those Redwood Region events.
Just for
fun, here are a few of my predictions for the upcoming
season.
- I predict a resurrected 914 will be axing in LPR
this year.
- I predict a certain maroon 911 will be Top Time of
Day sometime this year.
- I predict Tom Provasi will not always win.
- I predict a Ballerina will have a top PAX result
this year.
Since I
am writing this before the first AX of the year, we can
find out if I have any Nostradamus bloodline in my
body.

O'Morgan's |
Contributed by Emilie

OK, here's my
disclaimer. I had a glass of the O'Morgan's Eggnog Punch
early on in the evening, and
I was feeling pretty darn good and didn't take many
notes. So whatever
goes, GOES!!!
Let's see, I believe that when we
arrived, I saw GREEN, or was it Les with green hair?
YIKES!!! Doug Ryder with festive TATS, Rudi with his
hair parted and wearing a bowler hat and Ken and June in
TOTAL green from head to toe. Nearly everyone sported
the color GREEN - ties, hats, shirts, socks and Joanne
Antonowicz with a fantastic necklace that lit up!
As I was doing my Vice Presidential
Duties (collecting the $$$) I approached Rena and Chris
for their contribution, only to get this story when they
came up short on cash, "Well, just before we left, Chris
decided to change his pants because he did not like the
color." OK, so who really believes that story - just
what were you doing Chris that made you change your
pants?
The evening was fun-filled. The
appetizers were flowing, the wine and beer were chilled,
the punch - well, the punch had a KICK! Thank you
Captain Morgan! Laurie and Kurt brought a FAB appetizer.
Wow, that should make our next cookbook!
There was lots of laughter and
great conversation going on while the
'cooks' were busy in the kitchen.
And then came the main course-melt in
your mouth tender corned beef with the O'Morgan style
glaze served with cabbage, carrots, various types of
potatoes and homemade soda bread. What more could you
want? Mustard? Just ask and it appeared! There
definitely was a 'hush' that came over the crowd as
everyone enjoyed the wonderful St. Paddy's Day
Feast!
The desserts were awesome. The carrot
cake was fantastic and those mint bars were yummy; more
winning recipes to share!
Karen and Bob, being the gracious hosts
that they are, asked everyone to contribute a toast, and
what great toasts they were. The winners were Jackie
Mitchell, Steve Mitchell and Tony Antonowicz. President
Doug conducted a brief meeting, highlighting all the
upcoming LPR Events and then our hosts were presented
with a thank you gift.
I will close with my toast to our
hosts, the O'Morgan's...
May good luck
Be with you
Wherever you go.
And your blessings
Outnumber the
Shamrocks
you grow...
Thank you Karen and Bob for a great
evening. You are the best!
Let the pictures tell the 'true' story of the
St Paddy's Day GTG at the O'Morgan's!

Learning the AX Ropes
at Ground School |
Kudos to Anne and Larry, our fantastic
AX Chairs for putting on another information-filled AX
Ground School. More than 25 autocrossers got into the AX
spirit at Borelli Motor Sports on Saturday morning,
March 10. After the group fueled up with tasty breakfast
goodies from Kristina Borelli, we were ready to
learn.
In
between Anne and Larry's information-filled
presentations, drivers shared a wealth of knowledge
gleaned from their experience, or sometimes
inexperience! The most prevalent theme (besides having a
darn good time) was safety. Here are a few other
important, and not so important, recommendations that
came from the day's event:
- Make sure you have a Snell 2005 or 2010 rated
helmet! Loaners are available, but they're not as
pretty as Anne's new beauty!
- Gloves and driving shoes are a matter of personal
taste. However, watch shoes with long laces that can
get tangled in the pedals.
- Don't leave food in paper bags that the gulls can,
and will, get into.
- To maximize runs we shoot for a hot cutover. That
means the track never goes cold and the drivers and
workers seamlessly switch positions.
- Instructors are available. Don't miss the
opportunity to learn from them!
- When you are done with your driving shift, check
in at the trailer to get your work assignment. Your
reward? Anne's famous brownies!
- A fist out the window tells grid control you are
ready. Pointing a finger (a nice one) back at them
tells them you understood their directions.
- Biggest rookie mistake? Driving through the timing
lights. Always finish the course, even if you've
messed up.
- Most important safety device? Your eyes. Don't get
distracted while working the course. No cells, no
cameras.
- Don't chat while getting your timing slip. Someone
is approaching rapidly behind you!
- Above all, if you spin out remember: Both feet
in!
The
day wrapped-up with an informal tech session with
Borelli expert Dave Graff and great lunch selections
from Kristina. And of course, in autocross tradition,
the group enjoyed Anne's specialty, margaritas and
dense, chewy, dark chocolate brownies.

Porsche
of Fremont 991 Tech Session
|
Contributed by Doug
Ryder
Les Schreiber
set up a really interesting Tech Session at Porsche of Fremont, giving LPR
attendees the opportunity to view the inner workings of
the new 991. It was questionable whether or not a 991
would be available for dismantling, as they are moving
off the showroom floor as quickly as they come in. But
our Partners came through for us and a 991 was available
for our event.
|
Deconstructing the Porsche 991: A Rare
Look Inside | Like most
modern cars, you can't see very much unless you remove
the myriad of components blocking any view of the
interesting stuff, dictating that the car needed to be
"de-constructed" the day before the event, to afford a
good look at the guts of this magnificent
machine.
Pam and I were
invited up on Friday afternoon to observe and record
(photos and video) the dismantling effort. Our
ever-cordial host was Gunter Feldmeier who, as always,
set up an outstanding event. Ron Davidson, Porsche of
Fremont's own "Porsche Premier Technician", a rare
distinction for true masters of the Porsche automobiles
from the service perspective, was our guide through the
dismantling of the car.
I was
absolutely amazed at what had to come off the car. To
start, Ron removed the set of fans that are the first
things you see when opening up the engine compartment.
In 10 quick minutes the entire back end of the bodywork
was removed, exposing still more layers of the onion.
Things such as heat shields around the exhaust system,
large molded plastic pieces that help support the rear
body panel (aka the bumper cover), taillights and the
wheels were also removed to gain access to the engine,
transmission, etc. Although Fremont of Porsche has not
had a single 991 in for service, as yet, it looked like
Ron had done this a hundred times.
A few more
screws and retainers popped off and we were looking at
the top of the engine. The air cleaners and filters can
only be accessed if you remove the back of the car, but
it's only done once every 40,000 miles, or so. Then, the
entire set of bottom covers were quickly added to the
pile and we were now looking at a naked 991, with
viewing access to what everyone coming to the Saturday
event would want to see. The entire process took just
over an hour.
Although
the 991 has grown a couple of inches in length and
width, and the wheelbase extended about 4 inches, the
991 is almost 100 pounds lighter than its predecessor,
the 997. Cast aluminum, sheet aluminum and limited use
of steel are employed to provide a lighter, but stiffer
platform for the 991.
One interesting
new feature is the Sound Symposer. Porsche has gotten
the 991 to be so quiet in the cockpit that they opted to
"pipe" upper engine "music" into the interior at the
driver's discretion. So when you are in the zone and
totally absorbed in the driving experience you can flip
a switch and get an even more visceral experience
listening to the beautiful sounds coming from the upper
end of the motor. You can mute the stereo and listen
only to the symphony coming from the business-end of
this car.
|
Underbelly Tour of the
991 | On Saturday 32 people
turned out in the rather rainy weather for the Tech
Session. The car was ready for viewing and kept Ron busy
for a couple of hours answering a constant stream of
questions. In the end, I think most everyone came away
with the impressions I had from the two days of exposure
- that is, this is one incredible machine and if you are
fortunate enough to own one you will not be
disappointed.

Curious to know
more about your fellow LPR members? Haven't heard a good
car story in awhile?
Maybe you need a new cool driving road or are
just curious to
know who's
driving what. We'll answer these questions and more each
month as we feature a different member of LPR.
Remember, it's not
just the cars, but the people too.
Our
first edition of Porsche Personen featured the Iles with
their (literally) lifelong passion for the Porsche
marque. This month's member has also had a lifelong
passion for the world's finest sports car. Like so many
of us, his started as just a boy. Now, he's realized his
dream and is able to share it with his son Tyler, who no
doubt, has a Porsche in his future, too.

Ownership History

911 4S, black/black. This is my first Porsche (though I
had plenty of other ones in my dreams) purchased on
9/11/2010. What other kind of car are you going to buy
on 9/11? I spent a couple summers as a kid in
Germany and also lived there for 5+ years courtesy of
the US Army. So, after countless kilometers on
various autobahns, I've had "Porsche fever" for a
loooonnnnggggg time!

I
just joined PCA in 2012. I have a 12-year-old son,
Tyler, who is also a rabid Porsche enthusiast. He

My hobbies include biking, travel, r/c cars and going to
Laguna Seca. My day job is Technology sourcing at

A
Driving Story
We likely
have the only Porsche 911 in the world that's
transported quarter panels from a Ford Boss 302
Mustang. We were at last year's
Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge at Laguna
Seca. Scott Maxwell was coming out of turn 4 at the
2011 Continental Tire Grand-Am race at Mazda Raceway
when he was hit from behind and shoved into the tire
barriers. We were walking around the pits later in
the day when Tyler saw the front left quarter panel
about to get thrown in the dumpster. Tyler asked
the guys if he could have the panel and save it from the
landfill. Well, these guys weren't going to say no
to a kid and a simple request!
|
Tyler with front quarter panel from Scott
Maxwell's Grand-Am
Racer |
He
carried his new-found treasure around the track for the
remainder of the day, and I was trying to think how I
was going to fit it in the 911. Fortunately I had
my car cover, so we carefully wrapped the panel up. It
took five minutes of delicate maneuvering to finally get
it in the car without a scratch. The panel still
sits in the garage, and Tyler hopes to get it
autographed by Scott Maxwell and Joe Foster this year
before we mount it in his bedroom. There's another
good Laguna Seca story for another day at an LPR event.
Ask Tyler sometime about Brian Johnson (of AC/DC
fame) and his 1965 Lola T-70.

"in" to a 1970's 911 that hasn't been driven in
years. It would be a great project car, and I
certainly would like to tap into the experience of other
LPR members who've undertaken a similar
restoration.
A
good ticket story
Not
to brag, but it's been a while since I've had a
moving violation. So, my worst ticket will be
my next one. Actually, isn't that bad karma to
think about tickets?

Driving Season Tech from Les
|

In
the February we talked about getting our cars ready for
the warm driving season. Here are a few more things that
you should check or have checked by one of our great
Partner/Advertisers.
For
the following tasks, you will need to remove the wheels.
Then use jack stands or a lift. For safety sake, do not
work on the car while it is only on the jack!
- Check the oil level and fill up as needed. Change
the oil if you can do it safely and dispose of the oil
and filter in an environmentally friendly way.
- Replace wiper blades, washer fluid and air cleaner
filter.
- Replace worn suspension parts if you are confident
that you can reassemble them correctly.
- Check transmission fluid levels. For manual shift
cars, the gear oil is done underneath the car, so
ensure that the car is properly supported. Automatics
have a dipstick in the engine compartment, similar to
the oil.
- Check that the driveline components are secure.
See that CV joint rubber boots are not cracked or
open.
- Check brake linings and make sure they exceed the
minimum thickness.
- Check Brake lines to be sure they are secure-not
rubbing, leaking or swollen.
- Check that the throttle linkage is secure and not
binding, and that the throttle-return spring(s) is
fully functional.
- Check that no suspension components such as
shocks, sway bars of suspension arms are loose.
- Check muffler and exhaust systems for leaks and
that the hangers are holding the system in place
properly.
Keeping
your car properly maintained is important both for your
safety and the long-term value of your Porsche. Read
your owner's manual so you understand what type of
maintenance schedule is recommended for your car. And
always, get the help of an expert for repairs that you
are unsure of or lack the appropriate tools to do the
work properly.

Rallye Ready for Salt Lake
City |
by Rik
Larson, SVR Rallye Chairperson and Richard Wetzel, SVR
member
Preparations
are underway to present a rallye school on Sunday, April
15th for those interested in learning about TSD
(time-speed-distance) rallyeing. The TSD rallye is one
of the competitive events that you can compete in at the
Porsche Parade in July in Salt Lake City. The rules
allow for 4 classes so you pick the one that is
appropriate to your car's equipment (navigational
systems move you up in class ---- even if you don't even
know how to turn it on).
The
rallye school will be held at Porsche of Livermore. This
provides for a central location for most of the PCA
members in Zone 7. We want to thank Diablo Region for
working with us (Sacramento Valley Region) to host these
events. This event is open to all PCA members and to the
public. PCA members receive priority.
We will
have a 2-hour classroom session in the morning, followed
by a lunch break, and then an opportunity to put your
newly acquired skills to the test on an actual rallye in
the afternoon. You can attend both or either one.
We will
meet at Porsche of Livermore, 3100 Las Positas Road,
Livermore, CA. 94551, 925.447.6400.
Pre-registration
is required. We will have registration for the school at
9:45 am. The cost is FREE. The school will run from
10:00 to 11:45 am.
Registration
for the afternoon rallye is at 1:00 pm. Cost is $10 per
car. PCA insurance requires two (or more) people in the
vehicle. Our insurance does provide for 16 and 17-year
olds to be navigators (contact us for particulars).
First car will leave Porsche of Livermore at 1:31
pm.
Please
RSVP to Rik Larson (see info below) to ensure we have
adequate space and printed materials. This applies to
both events. We will use the 2012 Porsche Parade TSD
Rally General Instructions (assuming they are available
at the time of the school) as a
reference
for the school and the rallye.
There
is a follow-up
rallye techniques session planned for Sunday,
July 1. It will be held at Niello Porsche in Rocklin.
More information on that later.
Questions
can be sent to Rik Larson at rik.larson@gmail.com or call
