Asking $68,000 OBO

This 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa was acquired in Idaho in October 2017. Work done upon acquisition in 2017 included new Bilstein HDs on all four corners, a new Continental head unit, new front speakers, new brakes, new fuel lines, new rear sway bar, and Turbo-specification tie-rod ends.  This work was done by John Walker in Seattle.  Other work since has included a speedometer rebuild in October 2018, a targa top rebuild by Dan Petchel in NJ in February 2020, a Momo steering wheel replacement (original was retained as well), and a DME (ECU) exchange with Specialized out of Florida in July 2022.  I went with the stock tune.

The car was moved to Los Gatos in July 2021 and immediately registered in California, where it passed smog.  Unfortunately, its owner has a growing fleet of cars and drivers and inadequate garage space.  The seller is seeking a loving and responsible owner that will cherish this beauty and commit to enjoying the smooth shifting G50, the high revving 3.2, and the smiles that seem to come at the driver on any drive in this car.  With any luck, i’ll see you wearing out the next round of tires on Skyline Drive!

The car features integrated fog lights, power-adjustable side mirrors, a rear-window wiper, and a removable Targa roof panel that was refurbished by the legend himself Dan Petchel.

The car is finished in grand prix white (P5VN). The cabin features Linen leather (NA) and a power-adjustable driver’s side seat along with a black dashboard and black fiber floor mats. Other amenities include 16” Fuchs rims, central locking and power windows. Though the car has the factory alarm system, its key is absent and though all air conditioning components are present, it is not charged.  Even when fully functional, this system doesn’t get as cold as modern systems so I never bothered to charge it up!  The car also has the factory cruise control which is in need of a replacement cruise control cable.

The leather-wrapped steering wheel frames VDO instrumentation including a central tachometer with a 6,300-rpm redline as well as a 170-mph speedometer, a Quartz clock, and gauges for oil level, oil pressure, oil temperature, and fuel level. All of these are functional.  Occasionally there is a speedometer bounce in the needle or a delay in it registering at takeoff.   The six-digit odometer shows 149k miles, approximately 10k of which were added under current ownership.  Records obtained at acquisition in 2017 and included in this sale show new pistons, cylinders, machining, valve job at 135k miles.

Known needs:
  1. Cruise control cable;
  2. Intermittent bouncing/delayed speedometer;
  3. Front windshield wipers work – – new motor needed for intermittent functionality to work properly;
  4. AC system test & charge;
  5. Targa bar could use a respray as years of touch up paint are showing wear near rear targa seals and where bar meets the body
The sale includes the original steering wheel (in beautiful shape), the original shift knob (in tattered shape), an original 1987 dealer brochure (glossy silver), the original window sticker from Steve Clifford Motors in Provo, Utah, any paperwork I’ve been able to gather on its history, including a list of owners, the original toolbag with tools, a light Porsche-crested key, a valet key, a big ol VW-looking backup key, the Porsche locking wheels key, the original floor mats, and even emails from three of the previous owners.  Each of the previous owners seems to express that they  never should have sold the car. What am I doing!?
